Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Probation Substation Changes

Q: Does closing substations mean the community is losing services?
A: No. Services are actually expanding. Instead of limiting supervision to areas with substations, probation officers will now cover all neighborhoods in Hamilton County through an expanded Field Services Unit.

Q: Will probationers have a harder time reporting without neighborhood substations?
A: No. While reporting will be centralized at the main office, the department is increasing field visits and offering flexible options including Metro bus passes and technology-assisted check-ins when appropriate to reduce travel barriers. Officers will also meet probationers where they live.

Q: Is this change just about saving money?
A: No. The Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas Adult Probation Department is focused on enhancing public safety, protecting our community, upholding justice, and transforming lives. Centralization makes it easier to assign staff where they are needed, improve communication, and respond more quickly to issues with the goal of eliminating recidivism.

Q: Will community safety suffer without substations?
A: No. Community safety remains the top priority. Officers will spend more time in the field, providing countywide supervision, accountability, and a stronger community presence.

Q: Will probation officers lose support with substation closures?
A: No. Officers will gain support. Centralization improves collaboration and resource sharing by removing direct supervisory oversight responsibilities from Field Officers. This allows them to focus exclusively on field work.

Q: Do only certain neighborhoods benefit from this change?
A: No. All neighborhoods benefit. By removing geographic limits, every community in Hamilton County will now have equal access to probation services and officer presence.
