Private Complaint Mediation Service has been in operation since 1974 and is funded and administered by the Hamilton County Municipal Court System. Private Complaint Mediation Service began as a pretrial diversion program pursuant to Ohio Revised Code 2935.36 and is authorized locally by Administrative Rule 9.02 of the Hamilton County Municipal Court. The program is now formally known as Municipal Court Mediation, and in 2013, became a part of The Department of Pretrial and Community Transition Services.
Mediation is a process in which a neutral party, in this case a mediator, helps parties come to a mutually agreed upon resolution to their disputes for both criminal misdemeanors and civil cases. Settlements typically involve the return of property or restitution without a conviction. If a settlement is not reached, the parties return to traditional court processing which carry the potential of state sanctions as handed down by the Court.
