About Judge Hartman

A native of Cincinnati, Judge Curt Hartman graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1987 and, the following year, received a master’s degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University. Following his subsequent service in the Navy as a nuclear-trained officer on board a fast-attack submarine, Judge Hartman attended and graduated from Vanderbilt Law School, and then commenced his legal career as a law clerk for Judge Rhesa H. Barksdale of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Returning to Cincinnati, Judge Hartman initially worked as a litigator with the law firms of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister and Ulmer & Berne before starting his own law practice in 2002. During nearly 15 years of operating his own law firm, Judge Hartman’s legal practice involved a broad range of public interest litigation and First Amendment issues, with cases at all level of the state and federal judiciary, including before the United States Supreme Court (Susan B. Anthony List v. Driehaus, 573 U.S. __, 134 S.Ct. 2334 (2014)).

Prior to assuming the bench, Judge Hartman served as special legal counsel to the Mason Municipal Court and, in 2016, served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. In March 2017, Ohio Governor John Kaisch appointed Judge Hartman to his present position as a judge on the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court
